So What Did You Do Last Night??

Last night was a night of all nights! We spent a few hours at Children's ER. Around 7:45 I was in the kitchen. Grisham and Genevieve were playing on the floor. Next thing I knew Grisham was choking on something. I called for Scott and smacked Grisham on the back and figured I better do the Heimlich on him. He started breathing and crying. We asked him what he put in his mouth and he handed me the wooden curtain tie back. Pointed to the missing screw and pointed to his mouth (all while screaming) This had us really worried. I called Brenner's mom to see if we should go straight to Children's or just go down the street to Doctor's. She said if we go to Doctor's they will probably just transfer him anyway. She said she would watch Genevieve for us while we went to the ER. We hurried out the door. Grisham kept whining and saying "hurry mommy it hurts, we need to hurry." Not only was the crying and screaming worrisome but he was drooling like a baby. His shirt was soaked in spit. He didn't swallow any of the spit so we were worried about a blockage or a perforation. After dropping Genevieve of at Audey's we rushed downtown. We even went flying by a cop on the highway and he didn't pull us over. One prayer answered. Scott dropped us off at the ER doors and I went in to stand in line. There were about 12 people in front of us and 1 person registering. I was starting to doubt our choice of hospital. We waited and waited and waited and finally got up to the window to register. We told them what was happening, the nurse called for an x-ray and said it would just be a few minutes. We sat down and a few minutes later we were called back to the triage area. By this time Grisham had calmed down and the drooling had slowed. Scott said that the drooling was probably from the screw slowly going down. It might have scratched him and that was why he wouldn't swallow. When we got to the triage area the screw must have made it to the stomach and he was feeling much better. But we had to wait for the x-ray to confirm it. The nurse took vitals and then walked us down to the x-ray area. Grisham did so well. Scott stood with him while the x-ray was taken. I watched from a window. Scott asked the tech if he could see the x-ray after it was processed. The guy kinda looked at him weird and left the room. I told Scott that he better show him his credentials that way the guy doesn't think that you are a nut off the street who has watched one to many ER shows. The guy called Scott back a few minutes later and sure enough there was the screw. In Grishams stomach. I was soooo relieved after that point. It wasn't stuck in his throat or worse stuck in his bronchi. We walked back to the waiting room for some more waiting. We were finally showed a room to wait in and settled in for some more waiting. The intern came in first to see Grisham. She confirmed the screw in the belly and said that she was going to talk to her attending who would then talk to the surgeon. So we waited some more. The attending came in much later and said that we were just going to let it pass and not do surgery. We knew that there was a possibility that they would want to go in after it but thank God they didn't. They gave Grisham some juice and crackers to see if he would hold it down. If he could we could go home. Grisham drank his juice ate one cracker and said that he was ready to go. OK, then. We were all soo tired by this point. Scott was post call and He got to spend it back in the hospital. Lucky him. I was so thankful that it was all over and Grisham would be alright. Now I am on poop duty. I have to sift through the poop to make sure it passes. Gotta love being a mom:) All in all we got in and out in four hours. We picked up Genevieve and went home, exhausted.
